Jesús García Bernardo

I am an artist living and working between Madrid and Zamora. I mainly use drawing, painting and photography as mediums.
I studied Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca, and obtained a specialized master’s degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. I also studied Sculpture at Salamanca Applied Arts School. There, I worked with different materials such as stone, wood, plaster, wax and bronze. And I learnt modeling, casting and carving techniques.
The last year of college, I obtained a three-month Erasmus scholarship to study at the Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, in Maastricht (Holland). After this period of time, I applied for a full year residency, and was admitted to their program. I specialized in Photography, and discovered my passion for staged photography. From there on, I focused my artistic activity on this field.
Back in Spain, I held several photography exhibitions where I reflected on the photographic medium, its narrative capacity, and its indexical nature, using large-format pinhole cameras. I continued my studies at the School of Art No. 10 in Madrid, where I studied Artistic Photography.
Simultaneously, I started my research work in the field of photographic semiotics within the doctoral program of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid. I presented "The narration of photography" thesis and obtained the Diploma of Advanced Studies.
Since 2005, I have combined my work as an artist with my career as an educator, teaching at different schools and universities over the years: TAI School of the Arts (2005-2012), Condé Nast College Spain (2017-2018), the Carlos III University of Madrid (2013-2018), Istituto Europeo di Design (2017, 2020-2022) and EFTI International Center for Photography and Cinema (2017-present).
At that time, I began working in the world of fashion photography. First, in a company directed by photographer Javier Vallhonrat, and later, in my own digital post-production studio that specializes in fashion photography. At the studio, we work with advertising agencies, audiovisual producers, magazines, photographers and artists.
With regards to my artistic work, nowadays, I am focused on paintings on paper with inks, enamels and acrylic paint.
I am passionate about comics, and I incorporate several of the codes of the genre into my drawings, such us the sequential narration, the use of vignettes, and the inclusion of texts and onomatopoeia. I have also been marginally influenced by the world of fashion and its stereotypes.
In my drawings I reference staged photography and include elements such as sets, diorama, scale models, and small sculptures.

Soy artista y vivo y trabajo entre Madrid y Zamora. Utilizo como medios sobre todo el dibujo, la pintura y la fotografía.
En 2002 me licencio en Bellas Artes por la Universidad de Salamanca, especializándome en Diseño Gráfico e Ilustración.
Paralelamente, curso el Ciclo Superior de Artes Aplicadas a la Escultura en la Escuela de Artes de Salamanca. Allí trabajo con técnicas de modelado, vaciado y talla utilizando distintos materiales como la piedra, la madera, la escayola y la cera.
El último año de la carrera obtengo una beca Erasmus para cursar tres meses en la Universidad Zuyd de Ciencias Aplicadas, en Maastricht (Holanda). Después del periodo de la beca, solicito la admisión para continuar mis estudios allí y curso el año completo. Me especializo en Fotografía, y descubro mi pasión por la fotografía escenificada. A partir de ese año, centro mi actividad artística en este campo.
De vuelta en España, realizo varias exposiciones de fotografía donde reflexiono sobre el medio fotográfico, su capacidad narrativa y su carácter indicial, utilizando cámaras estenopeicas de gran formato. Continuo mis estudios en la Escuela de Arte nº 10 de Madrid, donde curso el Ciclo Superior de Fotografía Artística.
Al mismo tiempo, inicio mi labor investigadora en el campo de la semiótica fotográfica dentro del programa de doctorado de la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. En 2005 obtengo el Diploma de Estudios Avanzados con la defensa de la tesina “La narración de la fotografía”.
Desde el año 2005 compagino mi labor artística con la docente, impartiendo clase en distintas escuelas y universidades: Escuela TAI (2005-2012), Condé Nast College Spain (2017-2018), la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (2013-2018), el Istituto Europeo di Design (2017 y 2020-2022), y EFTI Centro internacional de Fotografía y Cine (desde 2017).
En esa época, empiezo a trabajar en el mundo de la fotografía de moda en el laboratorio dirigido por Javier Vallhonrat. El año 2007 fundo mi propio estudio especializado en la postproducción digital de fotografía de moda. En el estudio trabajo con agencias de publicidad, productoras audiovisuales, revistas, fotógrafos y artistas.
En mi producción artística actualmente empleo sobre todo tintas pigmentadas, esmaltes y pintura acrílica.
Me apasiona el cómic y adopto varios de los códigos del género en mis dibujos: la narración secuencial, el empleo de viñetas y la inclusión de textos y onomatopeyas. También me influye de manera marginal el mundo de la moda y sus estereotipos.
Otra referencia constante es la fotografía escenificada: incluyo elementos como escenarios a escala, decorados, maquetas y pequeñas esculturas.
